General Election Announcement

General Election Announcement

Dear Party Faithful,

Firstly let me thank everyone involved in the recent council election campaign. It was a bumpy ride but well worth the effort.

Special thanks to Derek Scott, Stevie McNamara (again), Peter Sidor and Abe Maymay for absolutely sterling work. Many thanks to all who stood and congratulations to Chris Collings and Daniel Fraser for a great result. The latter breaking the party record with 99 votes. Red balloons in the post.

I believe overall it was a successful campaign for us and merely the beginning …

General Election June 8th

General Election June 8th

The UK Prime Minister Theresa May has decided to disrupt our council election campaign by selfishly and inconsiderately calling a snap General Election. (Tsk!)

However, be that as it “May”, if life gives you lemons…squeeze them back in the ****s eyes is what I say.

Accordingly the leadership team will be doing our best to appoint a campaign manager and place some candidates in key positions in Scotland. Given our current financial situation we are looking at three, possibly four, candidates at the most but ideally I’d …

Happy New Year

Happy New Year

There is only one thing worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.

So opined Oscar Wilde. Although if he was so smart, how did he end up in Reading Gaol? That said, In terms of the Scottish Libertarian Party, I’m inclined to agree with the droll polymath. Right now we are not being talked about. I hope we can change that in 2017, and for all the right reasons.

For those of you who don’t know, 4th May 2017 will be the Scottish …

A Clarion Call

A Clarion Call

As many of you know Elections for the Scottish Parliament are to take place on 5th May 2016. Many of you out there may not know that the Scottish Libertarian Party intend to put up candidates for this election. The number of candidates, who they will be and in which constituency they will stand has not yet been finalised. (Watch this space.) Some of these factors, if not most, will come down to funding. (More of which ..later.)

The Scottish Libertarian movement is a broad church …

A Humble Foreign Policy Does Not Mean Military Weakness

A Humble Foreign Policy Does Not Mean Military Weakness

Ministry of Defence has been synonymous with Ministry of War in recent decades, but the reality is that elevating the capacity to wage war abroad does not provide security at home.

It is a military fact that you don’t need parity in weapons with an aggressor to repel an invasion. Just look at the fiscal nightmare our excursions in Iraq and Afghanistan have wrought upon us by far poorer nations with far poorer military capacities than our own.

Security is the ability of a nation to defend …

Living Wage : The Road to Hell… is paved with good intentions.

Why The Scottish Libertarian Party are not endorsing The Living Wage

Often people are incredulous as to why anyone would oppose the living wage. It seems to make sense, right? A fair day’s work for a fair day’s pay?

Why would The Scottish Libertarian Party choose not to endorse this law? Why would any Libertarian – someone who believes in personal freedom – oppose that?

Actually there are some fairly nuanced and well considered reasons for opposing the living wage that may surprise you – here are five …

Consent is The Basis of Morality

Consent is The Basis of Morality

Recently one of our candidates, Tom Laird, caused a stir at the local hustings in Leith for: “comparing taxation to rape.”

Now this may well have been a poorly conceived analogy devoid of context, and it will no doubt get flung back in the face of the party to the exclusion of other issues; but to compare is not to equivocate. Apples and Oranges can be compared.

The clip now exists on youtube under the uncharitable title, “Is taxation as bad as rape” – something Tam never …
