Ofcom’s control of the media has got to go

Guest article from Jonathan Rainey

Following the debates in the UK Parliament surrounding the new Online Safety Bill [1] which, while it has it’s good intentions on tackling some issues like children accessing bad material, promotion of self-harm (centred primarily around the case of 14-year-old Molly Russell who committed suicide after finding material encouraging her to cause herself physical harm & posted online publicly about her bad depression [2]), internet fraud and cyberflashing, it officially proposes that Ofcom, the British regulator of postal & telephone communications …

The history of disarmament and why we should have the right to keep and bear arms

The history of disarmament and why we should have the right to keep and bear arms

The right of anyone to bear arms is an essential right to any society that does not wish to be ruled by tyrannical governments, let alone violent criminals, so why is it that so many people in power have a tendency to want to be on a mission to disarm society in their bid to stop most or any crime from happening to us and in turn, albeit mostly inadvertently, have the state use violence against us?

For anyone that takes the time to study history …

Wales’ Latest “Experiment” in UBI will Prove Nothing and Here’s Why

Wales’ Latest “Experiment” in UBI will Prove Nothing and Here’s Why

Would anyone be surprised to see that you were better off, or that you “loved free money,” as was reported of the participants of the Finland study that …

Do Feminists Deserve Free Speech?

Do Feminists Deserve Free Speech?

“I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it”

Evelyn Beatrice Hall

There could not be a concept more foundational to western civilization than the right to freedom of speech. Yet, in today’s political climate of censorship and cancel culture, the sentiment expressed in the quote above may seem old-fashioned, maybe even quaint. Sadly, it seems that there are increasingly few people in the modern world willing to allow their political enemies a voice and even fewer …

They want to be one of The Elect in Holyrood Heaven

 – but some questions need to be answered first

by Ian Mitchell

After Wednesday night’s uninformative television debate between the leaders of the main parties standing in the May election, it is increasingly important to ask candidates what they actually stand for. They work for the voter, so the voter is entitled to know what they believe in.

How to fail at writing laws, a guide by the SNP

How to fail at writing laws, a guide by the SNP

New legislation to deal with hate crime – including “stirring up” hatred – has been introduced to the Scottish Parliament. Scotland’s Justice Secretary Humza Yousaf described the new bill as “an important milestone” in protecting victims. He said: “By creating robust laws for the justice system, Parliament will send a strong message to victims, perpetrators, communities and to wider society that offences motivated by prejudice will be treated seriously and will not be tolerated. Stirring up of hatred can contribute to a social atmosphere in …

A Statement on Covid19 Developments

A Statement on Covid19 Developments

We, the Scottish Libertarian Party, support government efforts to contain the Coronavirus but we have grave concerns about the effects of the current measures. We recognize that it’s a serious issue but we are concerned that the long term effects on the economy could be worse than the effects of the virus itself.Worrying about the “economy” seems so frivolous when people’s lives are at stake but we need to remember that poverty kills as well. If we ruin people’s livelihoods we can expect them to have …
